When you are preparing for an expansion of your business to include an enhanced or new online presence, it is important to know why custom SLA is important for managed hosting services. The Service Level Agreement is the defined level of provided service that the business can expect from the service provider. It is also the definition of components of service that the client will be expected to provide. Each determination is carefully spelled out so that both parties understand fully the rights and responsibilities.

Network connectivity is the the ability to include the amount and speed of connection between the client server and the host equipment. Further, the agreement describes the type of connectivity that is contracted. For example, it might be 100 Mb/s switched ethernet that is the operating connection and type.

The equipment that is used in the operation of an agreement is specifically identified. This includes the dedicated managed server model and perhaps the brand. The agreement might also specify how long the expected life is. The SLA might include information about when the equipment will be replaced and what constitutes obsolescence. Stating how and when the replacement will be accomplished is a part of an agreement.

The server provider is expected to perform ongoing monitoring of a system and avoid server downtime. The client must be able to depend on the system being available during specified periods. At the same time, it is expected that there will be periods on a regular basis when the server must be down for scheduled maintenance. Typically this will be during hours of low usage. If there is emergency maintenance needed, the agreement will spell out a response time and what will be the results of noncompliance with the terms of a contract.

Administrative duties are another defined expectation for the host agency. Clients expect to be able to ready someone at the hosting organization, at least during normal working hours. The provider must configure the system and provide maintenance, implementation, setup of the file system and configuration of remote printers. The provider does the hardware installation, the maintenance of the console access system and power distribution system. The provider also does the installation of customer applications and the operating system, but doesn’t do the administration of applications.

he provider is responsible for supplying the level of services and storage that will allow for the smooth operation of all aspects of the systems. The server has to contain enough storage for the operating system, application software and for backup systems needed by the customer. Sometimes, the client will need extra data storage that is outside the standard systems needs.

Typically, any applications hosted on the server defined in the agreement is the responsibility of the customer. The systems administrator will work with the staff of the client to install the software, but will not be responsible for its regular administration and operation. Any upgrades or enhancements must be the responsibility of the client and the software vendor

Understanding why custom SLA is important for managed hosting is critical to a smooth operation of the entire organization. Keeping the software in prime condition with support and regular maintenance is necessary. Spelling out each part of the terms and identifying where the responsibility lies allows for understanding and smooth operation.
